Live recording can take place at almost any performance venue ranging from pubs and bars to concert halls, theatres and stadiums. Live performances are multi-tracked to achieve good separation between instruments. Crowd/ambient mics are also used and are mixed with the close mics to create a polished but natural sound that can be mixed in stereo or surround. All recordings utilize a 24 channel multi-track system expandable up to 48 channels. Recordings can be tailored to meet all requirements:
- Small venues with basic, or no, PA facilities
- Medium venues with good PA systems using either direct outs from the PA systems or a comprehensive channel splitting system
- Medium to large venues with full backup system and active splitting (eg. XTA DS800)
Location recording refers to any recording that takes place outside a traditional recording studio. This could be anywhere from a living room to a church, concert hall or stadium. All performances are multi-tracked, giving maximum flexibility during the mixing stage, which takes place at my studio. The photo to the left was taken when recording a jazz duo in the saxophone players living room. To view a video of their performance please click here.
Why record on location and not in a studio? Sometimes the studio can be distracting to the creative process. If you feel more comfortable and less stressed performing in your living room then that might well be the best place to record! With the correct selection of microphones and some portable acoustic treatment the results achieved can be just as good as you could expect from a recording studio.
Please contact me with your requirements. The list of possibilities is endless and can be tailored to suit all budgets.
